Yalumba Samuel’s Collection Barossa Bush Vine Grenache 2019

By |November 29, 2022|Categories: , , , , , |

All batches of Bush Vine Grenache are crushed as separate parcels to either static pumpover fermenters or open top fermenters. The majority of batches are fully destemmed, however for some the stems are left on to contribute another flavour dimension. The wild yeasts present on the grape skins are allowed to initiate fermentation. Particular batches are selected to remain on skins post-fermentation. This extended maturation helps to contribute an even greater complexity and individuality to the wine. After draining and pressing off skins, all batches are racked into older American, French and Hungarian hogsheads for six months maturation. The fragrance is saturated with brooding plum red fruits, dark cherries and perfumed berries. This is a defined wine showing the richness and concentration of the vintage. The palate is richly textured, fleshy, round and supple, with a red juiciness that merges into velvety tannins.

Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou 2008

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - 95 points: "Deep garnet colored, the 2008 Ducru-Beaucaillou begins a little broody, giving up glimpses of tar, chargrill, moss covered tree bark and fungi scents over a core of baked plums, warm cassis and blackberry compote plus a touch of unsmoked cigars. Medium-bodied, the palate has firm, ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness supporting the earth laced black fruit layers, finishing minerally."

Chateau Montrose 2020

The result of rigorous selection at each stage of production, in both the vineyard and the winery, this great, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon wine is typical of the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Structured and tannic but with all the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classé, with time it develops a delicate and complex bouquet. The wines have considerable ageing potential and are exceptionally long-lived. Matured for 18 months in 60% new French oak barrels, the premium wine accounts from 35 to 40% of the total production of Château Montrose.

Wine Advocate - 100 points

"Surpassing the 2019 and rivaling the 2016 as this estate's finest vintage of the last few decades, the 2020 Montrose is a monument in the making. Wafting from the glass with aromas of violets, dark berries, licorice, loamy soil, black truffle and subtle spices, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with a seamless, elegantly muscular profile, terrific purity and energy, beautifully powdery tannins and a long, resonant finish. It checks in at 13.7% alcohol, the same as the superb 2009, but it is even deeper, more vibrant and more complex than the 2009. This will be worth a special effort to seek out and only confirms Montrose's status as one of the contemporary Médoc's leading estates and a de facto first growth."

About Chateau Montrose

Château Montrose, a prestigious wine estate situated in the renowned St. Estéphe appellation, is widely recognized as one of the region's premier properties. It stands as a producer of remarkable wines known for their exceptional longevity within the Médoc. From 1962 until 2006, Montrose was under the ownership of Jean-Louis Charmolue before being acquired by Martin and Olivier Bouygues, distinguished proprietors of the eponymous construction firm Bouygues. Montrose's wines are carefully crafted using a blend primarily composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Following meticulous production, the wines mature for 18 months in oak barriques, with approximately 30% of the barrels being new. Traditionally, Montrose wines exhibit a profound color, austere character, and impressive power in their youth. However, they possess the extraordinary ability to age gracefully, embodying the quintessential characteristics of St. Estèphe clarets once fully matured. Classified as a 2ème Cru Classé, Château Montrose continues to exemplify excellence in winemaking and stands as a benchmark for the appellation.

The outstanding weather in 2015 resulted in rich, fruity wines with great balance and excellent structure. Made from very ripe fruit, they have a perfect harmony and a remarkable underlying softness. Powerful Cabernets dominate the blend. Rich, fleshy and dense, they harmonise with the well-structured Merlots. The Petits Verdots are dark and spicy, and bring a touch of complexity to the wine.
