For centuries, the Schioppettino grapes were cultivated in Friulli-Venezia Giulia, in Italy. In the middle of the 19th century, with the advent of phylloxera, Schioppettino was almost completely destroyed. In 1970, Paolo and Dina Rapuzzi founded the winery Ronchi di Cialla and managed to find about 60 surviving vines of Schioppettino. They made new cuttings and managed, in the space of 2 years, to create a first wine estate of 3,500 vines that marked the rebirth of the Schioppettino. In the words of Nick Jackson MW: "Schioppettino is a paradoxical variety: intensely aromatic, medium-bodied, with a mere 12-12.5% alcohol, high acidity and a lingering, perfumed finish, it is also, in spite of its lightness, capable of very long aging." The 2017 vintage is made with 100% Schioppettino grapes, aged in French oak barriques for 14-18 months and in bottles for 30-36 months. According to the producer the wine has capacity to age and develop in the next 20-23 years. So buy 2 bottles: one to drink now and another one for aging! Ronchi Di Cialla Schioppettino Di Cialla 2017 has a balanced ruby red color with bright reflections. It has aromas of white pepper and small red fruits, currants and blackberries, intriguing balsamic and undergrowth (sous-bois) notes.

Made to be more approachable, yet delivering the quality experience of Ornellaia, Merlot has a dominant role in this wine in contrast to the Cabernet Sauvignon in Ornellaia. “With its usual intense colour, Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia 2019 has a nose full of fresh notes of ripe red fruits, accompanied by a lively balsamic vein with aromatic hints of cypress and eucalyptus berries. Massolino Barolo Rionda Riserva 2014
Barolo Vigna Rionda is one of the most representative wines of Serralunga d’Alba. Powerful and structured on the palate, but with an array of elegant, delicate aromatics.98 points - Vinous
The 2014 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is a stunning wine. Sweet, perfumed and deep, the 2014 is off-the-charts great. Dark red and purplish berry fruit, mint, lavender, spice and hard candy infuse the 2014 with striking layers of nuance. But what really impresses about the 2014 is its depth and huge vertical build. All the elements fall into place in a sumptuous, deep Barolo that screams with character. Beams of tannin punctuate the finish. Massolino's 2014 is one of the greatest Vigna Riondas I have ever tasted. (AG) 98+ About the producer The Massolino family has deep roots in the Langhe. Great-grandfather Giovanni Massolino founded the winery in 1896 and was the first to bring electricity and a steam-operated machine for harvesting grain to Serralunga d’Alba. Grandfather Giuseppe was one of the founders of the local winegrowers’ consortium in 1934 and father Giovanni bought the first single vineyard, Parafada. Today, the estate is run by siblings Franco, Roberto and Paola.
