Super Tuscans: Tuscany’s Rule-Breaking Icons

The term Super Tuscan was born in the 1970s, when a handful of Tuscan producers broke away from the restrictive DOC regulations and began blending local grapes with international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. These bold wines didn’t fit the rules—but they quickly gained a reputation for exceptional quality and global appeal.

What Are Super Tuscans?

Super Tuscans are premium red wines from Tuscany that combine Bordeaux varieties, Sangiovese, or a blend of both. They often carry the Toscana IGT designation, giving winemakers freedom to experiment outside traditional classifications such as Chianti Classico.

–aia vs. –ello: A Simple Way to Remember

One of the easiest ways to recognize a Super Tuscan is by its name:

  • Wines ending in –aia—like Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Lupicaia, and Solaia—are typically Bordeaux-style blends, featuring Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. These wines are rich, structured, and built to age.

  • Wines ending in –ello—like Tignanello and Flaccianello—usually highlight Sangiovese as the main grape, often blended with small amounts of Cabernet or Merlot for depth.

Both styles showcase Tuscany’s balance of elegance, structure, and ripe Mediterranean fruit.
