Petrus: A Legend in Bordeaux Now Available in Miami

Château Petrus is one of the most sought-after wines in the world, known for its history and unique terroir. Located in Pomerol, Bordeaux, Petrus has built its reputation through precise viticulture, winemaking expertise, and its distinctive iron-rich blue clay soils.

A History of Petrus

Château Petrus takes its name from the Latin version of St. Peter. For nearly 200 years, the estate was owned by the Arnaud family before being sold to Madame Loubat around World War I. Upon her passing in 1961, her family sold Petrus to Jean-Pierre Moueix. Today, it is owned by Jean-Francois Moueix and his family.

The Terroir

The 11.5-hectare vineyard of Petrus is on the highest point of the Pomerol plateau, benefiting from natural drainage. Its blue clay subsoils are rare and found only in a 13-hectare area of Pomerol. Unlike neighboring vineyards, all of Petrus’s vines are planted on this blue clay, giving the wine its distinct character.

Viticulture and Winemaking

Petrus produces only one wine. Olivier Berrouet has been the winemaker since 2008, following his father, Jean-Claude Berrouet, who served as winemaker for over 40 years. The vineyard is carefully managed year-round, including green harvesting to maintain low yields and high-quality grapes.

The grapes are hand-harvested, fermented in temperature-controlled concrete tanks, and aged in 50% or more new French oak for 15 to 18 months, highlighting the qualities of the Merlot grapes and terroir.
