Tornatore Etna Rosso 2023 comes from vineyards on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, where high elevation and volcanic soils give Nerello Mascalese its characteristic combination of fragrance, freshness and mineral character.

The wine is made primarily from Nerello Mascalese with a small proportion of Nerello Cappuccio. Red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry are joined by dried flowers, herbs, white pepper and subtle smoky mineral notes. The palate is medium-bodied and energetic, with bright acidity, fine tannins and a savory, persistent finish.

A short period in oak followed by aging in cement adds texture without taking attention away from the fruit or the distinctive volcanic character of Etna.

I find this a particularly useful introduction to Etna Rosso because it shows the region's combination of delicate color, aromatic red fruit, freshness and savory minerality without being overly structured. The 2023 is approachable now but still has enough acidity and tannin to develop over the next several years.

Food Pairing: Pair with grilled pork, lamb, roasted chicken, sausages, mushroom dishes, tomato-based pasta, eggplant parmigiana, pizza, or semi-aged cheeses.
