Joseph Phelps Insignia 2023 is the estate’s flagship Napa Valley red, built predominantly around Cabernet Sauvignon with Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc from several of Joseph Phelps’ estate vineyards.
Blackcurrant, blackberry and dark plum are joined by violet, graphite, tobacco, cocoa and subtle cigar-box notes. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with polished tannins, fresh acidity and layers of dark fruit carrying through to a long, precise finish.
The 2023 is particularly interesting because it marks the first Insignia vintage to include fruit from the Backus Vineyard. Aging was also slightly shorter than in previous years, with a more restrained approach to oak designed to preserve the freshness and energy of the vintage.
For me, the strength of the 2023 is the balance between power and definition. There is plenty of Napa concentration, but the freshness, fine tannins and graphite character keep the wine focused rather than heavy. It is impressive now, but clearly built for long-term development.
Food Pairing: Pair with grilled ribeye, beef tenderloin, braised short ribs, roast lamb, venison, mushroom dishes, or aged hard cheeses.
