Domaine Bonneau du Martray Charlemagne Grand Cru 2022 is one of Burgundy’s benchmark white Grand Crus, produced entirely from Chardonnay grown on the western side of the Hill of Corton.
Ripe apple, pear and nectarine are joined by citrus, white flowers, flint, beeswax and subtle smoky notes. The palate is concentrated and layered, with impressive depth, vibrant acidity and a long chalky mineral finish.
The 2022 spends its first year in barrel before additional aging in a combination of stainless steel, larger-format oak and sandstone amphora. This approach builds texture and complexity while preserving the freshness and mineral character of the Chardonnay.
What stands out to me is the combination of richness and tension. The wine has considerable volume and concentration, but the acidity and mineral structure keep everything precise. It is already remarkably complete, although this is a wine that should become significantly more complex with additional bottle age.
Food Pairing: Pair with lobster, scallops, turbot, sole with beurre blanc, roast chicken, veal, morel mushrooms, truffle dishes, or aged Comté.
Serve around 52–56°F. If drinking young, allow the wine 30–45 minutes in a large Burgundy glass or carefully decant it.
