De Grendel Amandelboord Pinotage 2022 comes from vineyards on the western slopes of the Tygerberg in Durbanville, just a few miles from the Atlantic Ocean.
Blackberry, dark cherry and plum are joined by clove, cedar, cocoa, roasted almond and subtle cigar-box notes. The palate is full and concentrated, with fine-grained tannins, balanced acidity and a long, savory finish.
The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in open vessels before aging for about a year in French and American oak. The coastal influence and elevated vineyard site help bring freshness to Pinotage’s naturally generous fruit.
I like the way this wine combines the richness often associated with Pinotage with a much more structured and polished profile. The dark fruit is generous, but the tannins, spice and freshness give it enough definition to work very well at the table.
Food Pairing: Pair with barbecue pork ribs, grilled beef, lamb, game, teriyaki-glazed meats, mushroom dishes, or aged cheddar.
Serve around 58–62°F. Decant for approximately 30–45 minutes if drinking now.
