Château Fombrauge, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé 2020
The largest Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Émilion, with roots going back to the 16th century. Owned by Bernard Magrez since 1999 and guided by Michel Rolland, Fombrauge sits on clay-limestone soils with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, aged 16 months in French oak.
2020 is one of the finest Right Bank vintages in years, and this wine delivers. Cassis, violets, dark plum, and chocolate on the nose, with chalky minerality underneath. The palate is full-bodied but refined — polished tannins, great mid-palate concentration, and a long finish. James Suckling called it their best ever, scoring it 94–95 points. Jeb Dunnuck followed at 93–95.
Drink now through 2035 with decanting, or cellar for more complexity. Pair with lamb, beef tenderloin, duck, or truffle dishes.
