Château d’Armailhac 1989 is a mature Fifth Growth Pauillac from an important moment in the estate’s history: 1989 was the first vintage released after the château restored the d’Armailhac name.
The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot has had decades to evolve, moving from youthful black fruit toward the complex tertiary character that makes mature Bordeaux so distinctive. Expect cassis and dried plum alongside tobacco, cedar, leather, dried herbs and earthy notes, with subtle spice and mineral character developing in the glass.
The palate is now more about elegance and complexity than power. The tannins have softened considerably, while fresh acidity helps preserve definition through the savory, mature finish.
This is a bottle for customers who appreciate the character of aged Bordeaux rather than the density of a young Pauillac. Bottle variation is natural at this age, making proper storage and provenance particularly important.
Food Pairing: Pair with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck, game birds, mushroom dishes, or mature hard cheeses.
Serve around 60–64°F. Stand the bottle upright several hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Open carefully and taste before deciding whether to decant; with a wine of this age, a long decant is not recommended.
