Louis Roederer Cristal 2018 is made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay selected from 57 estate parcels, bringing together some of the house’s finest vineyards across Champagne.
Nectarine, pear and citrus are joined by orange blossom, subtle smoke, white pepper and delicate pastry notes. The palate is concentrated yet remarkably precise, with fine bubbles, chalky freshness and a distinct saline character leading to a very long finish.
The 2018 combines 57% Pinot Noir and 43% Chardonnay. Part of the wine is vinified in oak, while malolactic fermentation is avoided entirely, helping preserve freshness and tension despite the warmth of the vintage.
What stands out to me is the contrast between ripeness and precision. There is generous fruit and texture, but the chalk, citrus and salinity keep the wine remarkably focused. It is already impressive, although the structure and freshness suggest considerable potential for further development.
Food Pairing: Pair with caviar, oysters, lobster, scallops, turbot, sole, roast poultry, or aged Comté.
Serve around 48–52°F.
