Borgogno "No Name," Langhe Nebbiolo DOC 2022
One of the most interesting stories in Italian wine. Borgogno — one of Barolo's oldest producers, founded in 1761 — submitted two identical Barolo samples to the classification commission. One was approved, one wasn't. Rather than discard the rejected wine, they bottled it without a name, labeled it with an "Etichetta di Protesta" (Certificate of Protest), and sent it into the world.
The wine comes from Barolo's Cannubi, Fossati, and Liste vineyards, fermented in concrete with native yeasts and aged in large Slavonian oak for two years — classic, non-interventionist winemaking. Nebbiolo through and through: cherry, violet, rose, tar, leather, and spice. Firm but refined tannins and a long, dry finish.
Drink now through 2030. Decant 30–45 minutes. Pair with braised short ribs, wild mushroom risotto, aged pecorino, or truffles.
Appellation: Langhe Nebbiolo DOC, Piedmont Grape: 100% Nebbiolo
