Bodegas Cerrón Matas Altas 2023 is an old-vine Monastrell from high-elevation vineyards in Jumilla, produced from ungrafted vines and farmed organically and biodynamically.
Blackberry, plum and ripe red cherry are joined by Mediterranean herbs, violet, subtle cocoa and balsamic notes. The palate is medium-bodied and concentrated, but there is excellent freshness, with fine tannins, lively acidity and a mineral character that keeps the wine energetic through the long finish.
The old vines grow at high elevation on limestone-rich soils, helping balance the natural ripeness of Monastrell with freshness and tension. Aging in large neutral oak vessels adds texture without bringing obvious wood flavors.
I like this wine because it shows a much more refined side of Jumilla. There is concentration, but the fruit never feels heavy. The herbal notes, acidity and fine mineral character give it a sense of precision that makes the wine particularly interesting at the table.
Food Pairing: Pair with grilled lamb, roast pork, beef, sausages, mushroom dishes, rice with meat, braised dishes, or aged Manchego.
Serve around 58–62°F.
