De Toren Private Cellar Fusion V 2020 is the estate’s flagship Bordeaux-style blend from Stellenbosch, led by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Blackcurrant, black cherry and ripe plum are joined by violet, cedar, tobacco, anise and subtle graphite notes. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with polished tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savory finish layered with dark fruit and spice.

Cabernet Sauvignon provides the structure and backbone, while the other Bordeaux varieties add texture, aromatic complexity and depth. French oak aging brings additional cedar and spice without overwhelming the fruit.

I like the way Fusion V combines South African ripeness with a more classical Bordeaux-inspired structure. There is plenty of concentration, but the tannins are refined and the freshness keeps the wine balanced. The 2020 is already expressive, although it has the structure to develop further with several more years in bottle.

Food Pairing: Pair with grilled ribeye, beef tenderloin, braised short ribs, lamb, venison, mushroom dishes, or aged hard cheeses.

Serve around 60–64°F. If drinking now, decant for approximately 45–60 minutes.
