Nicolas Joly Savennieres Les Vieux Clos 2016

Les Vieux Clos in Savennieres is an ancient vineyard site planted to Chenin Blanc, overlooking the Loire River. The biodynamic viticulture practiced by the Joly family over the course of many years results in wines that transparently convey this unique site. Thanks to naturally low yields and a serve grape selection at harvest with multiple passes to ensure ripeness, the wines are rich golden in color and highly concentrated.

The wine will be best enjoyed at 55 degrees F and will benefit from a thorough decanting. It will develop gracefully in the bottle for many years.

Nicolas Joly

Nicolas Joly is widely recognized as the “Godfather” of biodynamic wine. Such is his obsession with the methodology and his energy in promoting its use in vineyards the world over. He also happens to own outright one of the greatest vineyard sites in the Loire Valley, the Coulée de Serrant. Its reputation is ensconced in its distinction as a separately designated AOC unto itself. Joly also makes two other wines from impeccable sites in Savennières. Les Vieux Clos is his youngest site, five hectares planted to sélection massale in 1990. The slopes face east at a very steep grade in some spots, and the soil is a mix of predominantly schist interspersed with quartz and sand. The harvest is typically cropped at 30-35 hl/ha (well below the legal limit), and the wine is done in a combination of wood and tank. Where the Coulée de Serrant and the Rôches Aux Moines take years to reach their full development, Les Vieux Clos is a more accessible wine and a sterling introduction to the man who birthed a movement.
