Amiral de Beychevelle is the second wine of Chateau Beychevelle, a Fourth Growth in Saint Julien, producing top quality wines. Second wines (which are different than Second Growth wines like Montrose) are made to be enjoyed when young, while you wait for the Gran vin to age.
Amiral is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon and 32% Merlot and aged in French oak barriques (35% new). 2019 is an excellent vintage, and the wine is concentrated, with ripe notes of blackcurrant, cherries and dark plum. Very balanced on the palate, with elegant tannins, toasty and tobacco notes.
Quick note: Beychevelle (ancient dialect) means baisse voile in French, which translates to “lower the sails”. The former owner of the Chateau, Duke of Epernon, was a well respected man and every ship sailing in front of the Chateau, had to lower their sails as a sign of respect.
